And how to avoid dragging those problems into 2026

If there’s one thing 2025 made clear for MSPs, VARs and systems integrators, it’s that marketing has officially become a competitive differentiator. Buyers expect clarity. Vendors expect professionalism. And prospects expect you to show up with a message that actually stands out.

What we saw this year wasn’t a lack of effort. It was a shaky foundation.

After working with solution providers across the U.S., here are the five biggest marketing mistakes we saw in 2025 — and how to avoid repeating them.

1. Weak Messaging and Positioning

The number one mistake was simple: solution providers skipped the work of tightening their message.

When your positioning isn’t clear, everything downstream suffers.
Your website feels generic.
Your services sound interchangeable with every other MSP or VAR in your market.
And sales conversations turn into “let me explain what we actually do” instead of “let me show you how we solve your problem.”

Strong messaging is what separates the providers who get chosen from the providers who get compared. It shapes how prospects perceive your value and how vendors view you as a partner.

Everything in your marketing works better once this is solid.

2. “Launching” New Services Without a True Go-To-Market

A lot of providers rolled out new services this year — cybersecurity bundles, AI add-ons, co-managed IT, compliance packages, you name it.

But many of those services quietly fizzled out because the “launch” was basically a few website updates and a mention in the monthly newsletter.

A successful launch needs:

  • a clear message
  • a defined ideal customer
  • a simple way for sales to talk about it
  • a campaign that drives attention and interest

When you treat a service release like a checkbox, that’s exactly the return you get. When you treat it like a structured rollout, pipeline grows.

3. Not Leveraging Vendor and Distributor Partner Programs

This was a big one. Many solution providers left a lot of support on the table this year.

Vendors and distributors offer:

  • marketing toolkits
  • packaged campaigns
  • co-branded assets
  • ready-to-use messaging
  • MDF and co-op funding
  • paid lead-gen opportunities
  • training and enablement

Yet many providers never used them, didn’t know they existed or didn’t have anyone managing them strategically.

Not tapping into this support makes marketing harder and more expensive than it needs to be. The providers who grew the fastest this year weren’t the ones spending the most money. They were the ones using every resource available to them — especially the free ones.

4. Relying on AI to Replace Strategy

AI exploded in 2025, and many providers jumped in fast — sometimes a little too fast.

Tools promised to automate marketing, replace writers, build campaigns, manage funnels and “scale content instantly.”

The reality?
AI is great at speeding things up.
AI is terrible at deciding what matters, why it matters and how to say it in a way that fits your brand.

We saw providers publish content that didn’t sound like them, over-automate their outreach and unintentionally confuse prospects with messaging that failed to differentiate.

AI should support your strategy.
It cannot be your strategy.

Used thoughtfully, it’s a powerful accelerator. Used as a shortcut, it creates cleanup work later.

This one hit a lot of MSPs especially hard.

There are countless agencies selling prebuilt “MSP marketing in a box” services — syndicated blogs, templated newsletters, generic social posts and recycled funnels.

The problem is simple: none of it reflects who you are.
None of it communicates what makes your approach different.
And none of it stands out to a prospect who’s already been pitched by multiple providers.

These packages create activity, not differentiation.
And in a saturated market, blending in is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make.
